Seapost - March 2025

The latest e-newsletter from The Seafarers' Charity.

We explore how you can be part of an Ecosystem of Support by leaving a lasting gift in your Will. Seafarers face tough conditions at sea, and your legacy can fund vital services like mental health support, financial aid, and emergency assistance, ensuring they get the care they need.

For those seeking a challenge, the 24 Peaks Challenge returns on 5-6 July, offering an unforgettable endurance test in the stunning Lake District. Whether you take on all 24 peaks or a shorter route, every step helps raise funds for seafarers and their families.

Meanwhile, our Chief Executive, Deborah Layde, attended Maritime UK’s National Council, chaired by HRH The Princess Royal. The meeting focused on collaboration, sustainability, and future skills, reinforcing our commitment to shaping the maritime industry’s future.

Looking ahead to 2025, National Fishing Remembrance Day on 11 May will honour lives lost in the fishing industry and raise awareness of its dangers. It’s a time to reflect, pay tribute, and push for better safety at sea.

This issue also highlights our work in supporting the next generation of maritime professionals. By funding key initiatives, we’re breaking down financial barriers and opening career pathways for young people. Our commitment to equity is equally strong in empowering women in maritime. On International Women’s Day 2025, we reaffirmed our dedication to supporting women at sea through research and initiatives that promote psychological safety, mentorship, and wellbeing.

We also spotlight the Clyde Coastal Training Scheme, which is transforming lives in the West of Scotland. Thanks to our funding, individuals like Harry - who had no prior fishing experience—have gained vital certifications and secured paid placements. This initiative is creating real opportunities for those who might not have otherwise considered a maritime career.
